Shadow

-------Shadow-------

It is one of those sweet

and serendipitous

ways of summer

How

when the sun

has reached its height

The leaves

too

are fullest.

There is little else

I could hope to do

in a day

Than give thanks

to these small

and wonderful things

While resting

in the shadow

of a tree.

Still

-------Still-------

No matter

what kind

of day

I'm having

The sea tides

still

move out

and in

And the hummingbirds,

in their humble way,

come and go

from flowers.

Nootka Rose

-------Nootka Rose-------

The smell of salt water

and Nootka rose

Pulled me

gently

From out distraction.

"Be present while

you walk"

They reminded

fragrantly,

"For you are a guest here

And walking,

if you allow it,

Can be one

way

That you give thanks."

White Man’s Burden

-------White Man’s Burden-------

What if

the stories we told ourselves

were love stories?

Odes of joy

and not

denial.

How might

the world

be different

If those in power

followed

their own constitution?

If accountability

was something that children learned

was courage?

Imagine

the possibilities

that could unfold

If this country honored treaties

and the promise made

of emancipation.

Oh,

how things

would change

If the white man

did not turn

toward anger

But loved

ourselves

enough to reckon

With the shame

and burden

we carry.

Plenty and Enough

-------Plenty and Enough-------

Underground

the garlic seed

is multiplying

Yesterday we planted one

Tomorrow

there will be many.

Abundance

is the dream this world

is made from

Not too much for any one

But plenty

and enough for all.
